A WAY OF BEING IN THE WORLD

Improvisational painting and drawing is a record of thought in action, thought as movement. But not the kind of thought that we think only happens in the mind. Improvisation bypasses the frontal lobe—there is no separation between the thinking and the doing. It is not tied to language nor reason. There is no delay, no conscious mediator and it is not muscle memory. Improvisational movement is thought incarnate. A kind of kinetic intelligence. Movement is how we directly experience the world and our relationship to it, it is a way of being in the world. The movement, the action, does not describe or reference any meaning beyond itself. The actions, the brushstrokes, are in themselves "intelligent and intelligible." What we are perceiving is not separate from the world in which we are moving. And the world I am exploring is not separate from the world I am painting.
